10 things to do in West Kelowna before you buy a home here

Square footage and price per foot won't tell you what daily life here feels like. Here are ten ways to experience West Kelowna before you decide where to live.

The short answer

Before you buy in West Kelowna, spend time living like a local: tour the Westside Wine Trail, walk the Gellatly Bay waterfront, spend a day at the beach and on the lake, hike the trails, drive the neighbourhoods you're considering at different times of day, and picture your typical Tuesday. It's the best way to find the neighbourhood that actually fits.

If you're thinking about moving to Kelowna or West Kelowna, one of the best things you can do is spend time experiencing the lifestyle before deciding where to live. Square footage, price points and neighbourhood stats matter, but they don't tell you what daily life will actually feel like.

Here are ten ways to get a real feel for West Kelowna on your next visit.

  1. Explore the Westside Wine Trail. Spend an afternoon at a few tasting rooms and patios. For a lot of residents, having wineries minutes from home is one of the best perks of living on this side of the lake.
  2. Walk the waterfront at Gellatly Bay. Paths, beaches, parks and lake views. Go for an evening walk or catch the sunset and you'll see why people are drawn here.
  3. Spend a day at the beach. Swim, paddleboard, kayak, or just relax by the water. For buyers moving from bigger cities, easy lake access is one of the biggest lifestyle upgrades.
  4. Drive the neighbourhoods you're considering. Shannon Lake, Lakeview Heights, Glenrosa, Smith Creek and Westbank Centre all feel different. Pay attention to commute times, nearby amenities, parks and trails, schools, views, elevation and the overall feel.
  5. Get out on the trails. Hiking and biking are a big reason people choose the Okanagan, and trail access can help you decide which neighbourhood suits you.
  6. Try the local restaurants and coffee shops. Every community has its own personality, and it shows up in the places people gather. Ask me for my local recommendations.
  7. Visit the parks and recreation facilities. For families especially, see how the parks, rinks, sports fields and golf courses would fit into your routine.
  8. Get out on Okanagan Lake. A boat rental, paddleboard, kayak or tour gives you a whole new perspective on the waterfront neighbourhoods.
  9. Visit at different times of day. A neighbourhood can feel completely different in the morning, afternoon and evening. Check traffic, noise and activity at the times you'd actually be home.
  10. Imagine your typical Tuesday. Where would you grab coffee? How long is the drive to work? Where would you walk the dog? How close are the things you love to do? The answers narrow things down fast.

Finding the right fit

Buying a home isn't just about the right property. It's about the right community and the right lifestyle for your next chapter. The more time you spend in West Kelowna before you buy, the more confident you'll be when it's time to decide.
